MARTOS’ Bed-Study Brownstone renovation project was featured in the December 2019 issue of House Beautiful. Teaming with CWB Architects, MARTOS provided structural engineering design services for the renovation of this 1930’s townhouse located in the Bed-Stuy neighborhood of Brooklyn. The goal was to achieve a customized space for the client, while maintaining much of the brownstone’s historical charm. Phase One of the project was a gut renovation of the second and third floors, aimed at creating a more efficient use of space. Unique spaces were designed, including a Peloton niche, a video game alcove, and a closet dedicated equally as a wardrobe and a home for a curated record collection. Eventually a Phase Two will tackle the public zones of the house on the lower floors – the kitchen, dining, and living areas. Our structural scope of work included the review and design of joist sizing as well as a comprehensive framing plan for the upper floors. We also provided the structural design of dunnage.
